DIPLOMACY IN ACTION

Good afternoon, everyone! This post pertains specifically to those who signed up for diplomatic aid, though the announcement below will be heard by all imPorts, so if your character is paying attention, be sure to read the speech underneath the cut!

As of today, imPorts will receive another announcement, this time urging them to assist in international diplomacy. The appeal to the diplomats will go as such:

"Good evening, imPorts. Today, we call upon you for aid, not to fight for us, but to speak for yourselves. When we have called upon you before, you rose to the occasion. ImPorts have shown themselves to be articulate, passionate people, something that is reflected in the Ambassadors that you all have already chosen to speak to your needs, values, and desires.

But the Ambassadors are no longer enough. In the wake of this upcoming war, we need the world to understand that while the Russians may label you as no more than weapons to be stolen, you are far more than that. You have been members of our society, working alongside and breaking bread alongside our people. We, the citizens of America, recognize that. It is time for the rest of the world to recognize this, and we cannot do this by speaking for you.

We wish to send all willing parties to speak with our allies in South Korea, France, and Mexico, and thanks to Ambassador Revan's proposal, we will be sending a small group to speak with the UN as well. You must force them to acknowledge this recent kidnapping for what it is -- not theft, as the USSR calls it, but a major human rights violation. Speak with them. Convince them that your fellow imPorts must be rescued, and that never should the Soviets harm you again."

All assignments are determined by an RNG unless your character has a particularly compelling reason to be assigned to a specific country or assignment. This reasoning has to do specifically with the character sharing a culture with that particular country, or the ability to speak their native language. The teams have been sorted into the following categories:

SOUTH KOREA: Jinseok Jin, Death the Kid & Francis Urquhart.
Kanaya, Saul & Sadie Doyle.

MEXICO: Joaquin, Manolo, & Riza Hawkeye.
Dooku, Cu, & Max.

FRANCE: Fraser, Charles Xavier, Edgeworth.
Eric Duffoset, Lucy, & Chilton.

UN: Revan, Gregor, & Harrison Wells.
Mitch Hundred, Jeff Winger, & Raina.
Saint Walker, Kitty Jones & Papyrus.

More details on what each team will be debriefed on are in the linked comments!

As outlined in the PHASE II PLOT POST, players may simply submit their team's arguments to the Plotting Post, but as we will be putting up a log for all diplomats, we highly encourage everyone to play it out! The way you play it is up to you; the diplomats may have their own, separate speeches, may elect one individual to speak for the entire group, or some other organization entirely! Regardless of the organization, the government for each country/the UN will be asking each team 3 questions, which will be NPC'd by us!

Thank you to everyone for your continued patience with these dense posts. Please direct all questions HERE, and feel free to use the comments of this post to plot with one another. And, most importantly, have fun!

I had already talked to Revan's player about Kang being there for the UN talks, and I didn't realize that it was happening so quickly or that sign-ups were required. I thought it was a player plot for a little later down the road in February. Is there still any way I can join in on that or are sign-ups closed?

Hello!

Our group has a few questions. Given France's concerns with America and war, we were wondering a couple of things.

1) ICly would there be access to do quick research on France's history/current political climate, in this particular AU Earth?

2) If the answer to 1 is "yes" then what sort of history/current opinion could we find? Specifically:

  • Does this France mirror RL France in terms of general political opinion?
  • What is the current relationship between France and the USSR/other communist nations?
  • What is the relationship between France and EU and more general, what is the state of the EU in this world?
  • What is France's opinion on nationalism?
  • Where France has stood on the subject of prior ImPorts?
  • Also what is France's current relationships with South Korea and Mexico?

    Thank you!!

Ok, with regard to the benefits that the imPorts have brought America, we're wondering what would the more financial things might be? I don't know if you want to make up statistics, or have us make up statistics, or what have you. Francis definitely would have looked it up, given that you've told us that Korean was dependent on America for financial boons.

So far we've got the whole being able to provide revenue through endorsements and opening up their own businesses (and charities) and how the imPorts are the ones cleaning up after their own.

As part of Max's response, he's planning to reference historical events to back up what he says about America's preparedness. He knows a lot about history, but also knows things might be different here. If Max wiki'd the major wars America was involved in in his world, are there any that would come up as having gone very differently here in Momerica?

EDIT To clarify, I am looking to make sure he doesn't cite any historical event he should be avoiding.

[personal profile] marriedmedium 2016-01-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
So...realistically, Sadie's idea of good diplomacy is to have everyone sit down with a stiff drink and talk. She's not dumb, but she has a viewpoint that's very simple in some ways. Conveniently, she's also charming.

If someone wants to take the lead and speak for them, she'll support that, but she'd also probably end up piping up spontaneously.

Team Jinseok, Kid, Francis

[personal profile] grimreaping 2016-01-26 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
If South Korea is worried about possible retaliation by the USSR for helping the imPorts, Kid might suggest pointing out to them that there's no guarantee that the USSR wouldn't initiate hostilities toward them anyway, simply for being an American ally, and therefore it might be in SK's best interest to get out ahead of it by supporting the means to get the stolen imPorts back.

Alternately, if they want to go the pressuring route, pointing out that abstaining from helping is basically complicity in the USSR's actions, which the US won't look favourably on, may end up hurting trade anyway. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a hard sell that the USA can be biased with their monetary spending when their national pride is pinged. Therefore it's in SK's best economic interest to make sure the US really appreciates SK's aid.

Team Joaquin, Manolo, & Riza Hawkeye

[personal profile] medalsome 2016-01-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think as far as speeches are concerned our team has things under control. Joaquin and Manolo are from Mexico and from right after the revolutionary period, which comes with a strong sense of pride for their country of origin. Both can appeal to that sense of shared background, Joaquin garnering sympathy with words and Manolo through a song. Riza, of course, with her strong presence and longer history in-game, would have the best grasp on how to tackle assuaging their worries about the American government itself (unless she's found herself with reasons to mistrust them, then they'll need to brainstorm on how to spin their experiences to cover for potential weak points.)

As for the questions at the end, I see either Joaquin or Riza taking point in answering with Manolo providing back-up support given the more follower-oriented nature of his. Until we have the specific questions I'm not sure exactly what can be said, but I have a feeling this is how things might naturally play out.

Guys, ideas? Thoughts?

Team Cu, Dooku and Max

[personal profile] crapbearer 2016-01-26 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
So during the time between arriving in Mexico and the Big Day, if there's any media coverage, Max is going to be working on public opinion. His grasp of Spanish is... not great, but he'll be happy to at least try and chat with locals and reporters where he can while he's being shuffled to the embassy, partly to make a good impression, and partly because he's trying to understand what, exactly, Mexico's people (not just the government, but the citizens themselves) need from the US and the ImPorts. Back home he's stopped two separate alien invasions simply by stopping to talk to 'enemy' and taking time to understand appeal to what they needed. That's the strategy he's going to employ here, if he can.

Beyond that, though, he'll be this cute little ImPort boy who is being friendly and open and look at him try to speak Spanish. Isn't he adorable? How could you not support his cause? *bats eyes at the public*

As far as the actual speech, Max will be playing up his charisma and charm, but probably won't have a prepared speech and certainly won't be chosen to be the primary speaker. Thaaaat will probably be Dooku.

Max will interject with his own commentary and asides if he feels like the actual speech that's being given is too dry or soulless, or if he thinks something was overlooked that needed to be addressed.

SO how do we wanna do this folks?

As a whole, Mitch is going to push his experience with the UN pretty hard -- since he was the US ambassador there in his world, he's going to at least be familiar with the ins and outs of how this works -- even if the political climate is different, but it's one that he knows pretty well.

And he's going to push against their arguments pretty hard -- mostly in using experience in two worlds to push for more recognition as a population that's under fire -- particularly as a vast majority of them have submitted to any sort of regulation, something that no other population has to do etc etc --

What points would you guys like to address?

HI GUYS

Okay, so! This is a funky team that's pretty damn well positioned to address the worries about the funky alien types. Papyrus and Saint Walker both are so likable and sweet - I figure the two of them (with Kitty's help and guidance in writing and refining their speeches) could present themselves as the funkiest, weirdest, most out there and inhuman imPorts - who are genuinely good and sweet and optimistic. The two of them, next to Kitty who is intensely cute and sweet and develops her image to be cute and sweet, would probably soothe nervousness about the weirdness of the imPorts - and if the strangest imPorts are this sweet, that might calm their worries about imPorts generally.

Thoughts?

TEAM REVAN, GREGOR, AND HARRISON WELLS

[personal profile] exsithstential 2016-01-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Let's get down to business, to defeat, the Soviets-inhumane-treatment-of-extrauniversal-immigrants!

Revan may have pitched the idea but it's execution will likely be an involved process for everyone that volunteered. I'm thinking that we should discuss not only what our group is going to do, but the possibility of an overall strategy of all three teams. But for now, let's start with the former.

I think the major points listed in the plotting point should be a focus. That being: the danger imports present and their fluctuating numbers, as far as stability of ideology is concerned.

I don't know about you guys, but I think this is a pretty tough pair of points to tackle. Both are so closely tied up in the mechanics of the game and would require a large amount of creativity to outright "fix". Seeing as we're probably not going to find solutions to both import criminal punishment AND porting in/out frequently within the next month, I think we should instead look for possibly offerings that show the positive influence imports have on the world.

Some possible ideas would be examples of economic impacts import business and actions have had. And that despite our lack of resources, imports have largely begun to self police their more dangerous elements. At least that way they can be shown that even if there are violent aspects to import culture, they do take responsibility for it quickly. And as their culture grows and becomes more self sufficient, they likely would be willing to extent their help to the world at large.

Anyways, this is all just to get the creative juices flowing. Let me know what you think and we can go from there!

On a personal side note, Revan (and I) are hoping that a formal statement from the UN that imports are a social group that deserves human rights would put them one step closer to being able to form a more independent nation. Food for thought.
